I had the real privilege of knowing the amazing Agnes, both as colleague in the School of Law and comrade in the UCU. We shared a love of music (Nick Cave/Patti Smith/Leonard Cohen) and cats (her Micio and my Roger), and I will forever admire her unswerving dedication to important causes. Agnes’ commitment to – and enthusiasm for – the union was unsurpassed. I have such respect for the way Agnes truly lived her values. The opposite of an armchair activist, Agnes was entirely in her element in high-vis apparel on the picket line, fighting for what is right rain or shine. Yet kindness and that wonderfully wry sense of humour (never sanctimony) radiated from her in every interaction. As branch president, I was so inspired by the way Agnes built bridges rather than stoking division, tirelessly going the extra mile to understand where others were coming from. Always self-effacing and never dogmatic, Agnes was masterful at fostering consensus in spaces often typified by factionalism. She lived and breathed solidarity and truly believed that a better workplace/world was possible and worth pursuing. What a treasure. What a loss. Rest in power, my friend.
